To receive veteran and military education benefits, you must submit a Veteran Benefits Worksheet to the Veteran Services office each semester. 

A number of education benefits are available to veterans, service members and their families. Read the "at-a-glance" descriptions of benefits to determine which you may qualify for. Specific requirements and exceptions are applicable to all state and federal education benefits.


Chapter 33 –Post 9/11 G.I. Bill

Who: Veterans with Title 10 active-duty service on or after September 11, 2001. These benefits are transferable to a spouse and/or dependent(s). 

Benefits: The VA pays UW-Stout directly for tuition and fees. The student receives a monthly housing allowance (MHA) and book stipend ($1000/year maximum). Payments are pro-rated based on veteran's eligibility percentage.

Chapter 30 –Montgomery G.I. Bill (MGIB)

Who: Active duty veterans or service members who served after June 30, 1985 and contributed $1,200 into the program.

Benefits: Monthly stipend paid to the student.

Chapter 1606 –MGIB Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)

Who: Reserve and National Guard service members who signed a six-year contract.

Benefits: Monthly stipend paid to the student.

Chapter 1607 –Reserve Educational Assistance (REAP)

Who: Reserve and National Guard service members with a deployment or other Title 10 active-duty service (excluding training time).

Benefits: Monthly stipend paid to the student.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The National Defense Authorization Act of 2016 ended REAP on November 25, 2015. Some individuals will remain eligible for REAP benefits until November 25, 2019, while others are no longer eligible for REAP benefits.

Chapter 31 –Voc. Rehabilitation and Employment

Who: Veterans and service members with service-connected injuries that inhibit employment

Benefits: Rehabilitation, counseling, employment services, on-the-job training, post-secondary training and living services.

Chapter 32 –Veterans Education Assistance Program (VEAP)

Who: Veterans who entered active duty between December 31, 1976 and July 1, 1985, and made contributions to VEAP.

Benefits: VA matches $2 for every $1 contributed. Student receives a monthly stipend.

Chapter 35 –Dependents Educational Assistance

Who: Children and spouses of permanently/totally disabled or deceased veterans.

Benefits: Monthly stipend paid to the student.

Wisconsin G.I. Bill

Who: Veterans who served 90+ days on active duty during wartime or two years during peace time. The Veteran must have entered the service as a Wisconsin resident or maintained residency for the past five consecutive years. Veterans with a 30% VA disability rating can transfer the benefit to their spouse and/or dependent(s).

Benefits: The Wisconsin G.I. Bill provides a tuition wavier for the base tuition and segregated fees costs.

Wisconsin National Guard Tuition Grant

Who: Members of the Wisconsin National Guard who are actively drilling and in good standing.

Benefits: Reimbursement of tuition costs (excludes fees).

Who: Members of the Minnesota National Guard.

Benefits: Reimbursement of tuition costs.

Veterans Education (VetEd) Reimbursement Grant

Who: Eligible Wisconsin veterans who have not yet been awarded a bachelor's degree.

Benefits: Reimbursement of tuition and fees costs.

Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA)

Who: FTA is available to students currently serving on active duty or in a reserve component. FTA is applied for through the service branch directly. Each branch has specific restrictions and variations.

Benefits: FTA generally pays up to $250 per semester hour, with a maximum yearly cap.

Yellow Ribbon Program for the Post-9/11 GI Bill

UW-Stout has entered into an agreement with the Department of Veterans Affairs to fully fund the non-resident tuition costs of students using the Chapter 33 (Post-9/11) GI Bill. If you believe you are eligible, complete the online UW-Stout Yellow Ribbon Program application and contact the UW-Stout Veteran Services office.

Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA)

UW-Stout is a MyCAA program participant. MyCAA provides up to $4,000 of financial assistance to eligible military spouses who are pursuing a certification or certificate program.

Troops to Teachers (TTT)

The TTT program offers up to $10,000 in financial aid to eligible veterans and reservists. Individuals will go on to teach for grades pre-k through 12 at in-need public schools, charter schools or Bureau of Indian Affairs schools.

Veteran Priority Registration

In accordance with Wisconsin State Statute, priority registration is given to all veterans, service members, and contracted ROTC cadets who are serving or have served in the U.S. armed forces under honorable conditions.

Veteran Services generally awards veteran priority registration automatically. If you do not have priority registration, but believe you should, please contact our office directly.

Section 702 of the Choice Act

Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014 (“Choice Act”), requires GI Bill participating public institutions of higher learning to charge qualifying veterans and dependents tuition and fees at the resident rate, regardless of his/her formal state of residence for terms beginning after July 1, 2015.

Basic Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be using Chapter 33 (Post 9/11), Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship, or Chapter 30 (MGIB) benefits
  • Must live in Wisconsin (regardless of the formal state of residence)
  • Enrolls at UW-Stout within three years of discharge from a period of active duty that is of 90 days or more (or the veteran who transferred benefits discharge). This does not include Initial Entry Training.
