Academic integrity and honesty is critical to the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Stout and the University of Wisconsin System at large. When an instructor believes a student has committed academic misconduct, UWS Administrative Code, specifically UWS Ch. 14 –Student Academic Disciplinary Procedures, must be followed.

If an instructor believes a student may have committed to academic misconduct in their class, the instructor will do the following:
  • Promptly request a meeting with the student indicating that there is a suspicion of academic misconduct
  • Share the evidence surrounding the alleged misconduct
  • Allow the student to respond and provide their perspective to the allegation of academic misconduct

*If the instructor believes that there are students involved in academic misconduct who are not enrolled in the instructor's class, or if there is reason to believe a student may have been involved in other academic misconduct incidents, or the instructor feels that they could not give the student a fair hearing, the instructor should contact the Dean of Students Office for consultation.

After the meeting with the student, the instructor has two options:

  • If it is concluded that no misconduct occurred or that no sanctions are warranted, no further action is required.
  • If it is concluded that academic misconduct did occur and a sanctions are warranted, the instructor will issue one or more sanctions to the student.

*If the semester is ending and grades are due when you have not completed your investigation, or before the student's 10 day period to request a hearing has expired, or when a student has requested a hearing but it has not yet occurred, issue the student an "I" (incomplete) until the matter is closed and final. Also, please notify the registrar ( that the incomplete was given due an academic misconduct issue as stated above.

Sanction and Procedure

Sanctions are grouped by severity and procedure.

*A student has a right to contest/appeal any finding of responsibility and/or sanction imposed. The student must be informed of their right to appeal either verbally or in writing. The student has 10 days from the finding of responsibility to request a hearing.

Group A

  1. An oral reprimand
  2. A written reprimand presented only to the student
  3. An assignment to repeat the work, to be graded on its merits

Instructors can privately reprimand the student either in person or in writing and/or asked the student to repeat the work in which in the misconduct occurred. The repeated work must be graded on its merits without making deductions for the previous misconduct. No permanent record is made of the incident. The instructor should keep notes on the matter and shall verbally notify the student of the right to appeal within 10 days of the finding of responsibility and sanctioning.

Group B

  1. A lower or failing grade on the particular assignment or test
  2. A lower grade in the course
  3. A failing grade in the course
  4. Removal of the student from the course in progress
  5. A written reprimand to be included in the students disciplinary file

Instructors must prepare a written report summarizing the evidence leading to the finding of responsibility, indicate the sanction(s) issued, and notify the student to the right to appeal the findings/sanction(s) within 10 days. The instructor shall give a copy of the report or email the report to the student along with forwarding a copy of the report to the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students may take further action if the student has been involved in previous instances of academic misconduct or is in a professional or graduate program.

*Students should continue in class, take part in all assignments, and take all exams pending the outcome of the requested appeal process. Findings and sanctions will become final after 10 days from the date of the written report.

Group C

  1. Disciplinary probation
  2. Suspension or expulsion

If the instructor concludes that disciplinary probation, suspension, or expulsion is warranted, the incident must be referred to the Dean of Students Office. The referral report to the Dean of Students Office must include a description of the incident, summary of the evidence, and specification of the sanction recommended. This report shall also be given/copied to the student. The Investigating Officer from the Dean of Students Office will consult with the instructor and student. An appeal hearing is automatic with a recommendation of disciplinary probation or suspension/expulsion.

Student's Right to a Hearing

A student who has been found responsible and sanctioned for academic misconduct has a right to appeal the findings and/or the sanction issued. The instructor must inform the student of the right to a hearing either verbally or in writing. The student must request a hearing with the Dean of Students Office within 10 days of the instructor's oral or written decision. If the student doesn't request a hearing within 10 days, the finding of academic misconduct shall become final and the recommended sanction(s) shall be imposed. The recommendation of disciplinary probation, suspension, or expulsion, which can only be recommended by the Dean of Students Office's Investigating Officer, come with an automatic appeal hearing, unless the student waives their right to a hearing in writing.

Appeal Hearing

If a hearing is requested or required, a student affairs officer will schedule a hearing on the matter and convene an Academic Misconduct Hearing Committee. The hearing will be scheduled within 10 days of receiving the request or written report unless a different time period is mutually agreed upon.

The instructor will serve as a witness in the hearing and will be asked to make a statement and present the evidence collected surrounding the alleged academic misconduct. The student will have the opportunity to make a statement and present evidence contrary to the findings.

The academic misconduct Hearing Committee will listen to the evidence and arguments and decide whether academic misconduct occurred and what the appropriate sanction should be. The Hearing Committee is not limited to the sanction recommended by the instructor.
