Four University of Wisconsin-Stout employees recently were honored with the annual Safety Recognition Award, for those who demonstrate above-and-beyond safe work practices and help create a safety-conscious culture on campus.

The winners are:

  • Julie Berglund, biology lab technician, who has helped implement safety initiatives within the biology department, including a campuswide chemical database and a hazard assessment program for science labs, the latter in 2016. She is a member of the Research Safety Committee.
  • Shaun Dudek, assistant professor, communication technologies, who routinely demonstrates safe work practices with industrial equipment in printing and finishing labs and ensures student compliance with lab safety procedures. She initiated an effort to provide hair ties for female students in the labs.
  • Deano Samens, process lab supervisor, School of Art and Design, who oversees safe work practices in a wood shop that serves more than 1,000 students. He developed a safety training program and videos for each piece of lab equipment.
  • Cathie Weissman, financial specialist, School of Art and Design, the art and design safety coordinator. She works with students on after-hours building access and safety protocols regarding machinery and materials, including organizing training sessions with new student workers.

The awardees, based on nominations from colleagues and chosen by the Safety and Workers’ Compensation Committee, each received a plaque from Chancellor Bob Meyer.
